The project
A personalised inflight digital platform that connects passengers to products and services at 35,000 feet, deployed on more than 350 aircraft across British Airways, Iberia, Vueling and LEVEL. The platform is a digital marketplace serving passengers, crew and non-airline partners, and it delivers one consistent experience no matter which connectivity hardware is underneath, whether Inmarsat, Gogo or Panasonic. Thanks to that provider-agnostic architecture, bringing in a new provider is a breeze: the group has since moved to Starlink across more than 500 aircraft, and the platform lives on today as IAG Connect behind British Airways’ onboard Wi-Fi.
My part in it
Senior Fullstack developer maintaining and evolving the platform: backend services in Java, Spring Boot and Node, frontends including the captive portal passengers meet when they connect, and the systems that move data between aircraft and ground in both directions, plus the analytics and observability that make a fleet-wide platform debuggable. Work spanned the full path from shaping requirements to testing, production and monitoring. I also put real effort into how the team worked, using pair programming, mob programming and event storming to build well-oiled teamwork.
