The project
A new, world-leading inflight entertainment system for the seatback screens across Cathay Pacific’s fleet, built together with Panasonic Avionics and Reaktor Aero. The experience adapts to more than 14 screen types across three aircraft families, including the new Aria business-class suites, and introduces an industry-first integration of entertainment, lighting and seat controls (“Activity Modes”) alongside features like a game-like 3D journey map. The work has been recognized with a Red Dot Award 2024, a German Design Award 2025 (Gold), an iF Design Award and a Crystal Cabin Award 2025, and it helped make Cathay one of the very few airlines offering 100% seatback entertainment and 100% Wi-Fi fleet-wide.
My part in it
Senior Android developer on the seatback application: Kotlin and Jetpack Compose on custom in-seat hardware. I’ve built and own core parts of the experience, from media playback to the award-winning Activity Modes that tie entertainment, lighting and seat controls into one, plus much of the app’s architecture. Beyond the code, I’ve been heavily driving the project’s ways of working, facilitating several recurring workshops and meetings, and taking care of developer experience: CI with GitHub Actions and pragmatic AI-assisted workflows with Claude Code that keep a distributed team shipping fast.
